His body was interred at Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia, at Green Hill Cemetery. George graduated at Lexington, Virginia. George's occupation: Colonel, Confederate States Army.. George Alexander Porterfield, Jr., the son of George and Mary Tabb Porterfield, served in both the Mexican and Civil Wars. His military training was obtained at Virginia Military Institute, from which school he was graduated in 1844. During the two succeeding years he taught school in Richmond.

When the Mexican War began, Porterfield and two of his former classmates organized the Richmond company of a Virginia regiment. Becoming a first lieutenant in this body, he was later appointed adjutant of the whole regiment. He subsequently succeeded Captain Irvin McDowell as assistant adjutant general of the whole American division, then station at Buena Vista. He held this position from October 1847, to the end of the war. On his return from Mexico he was for a while in the employ of the United States Coast Survey.

At the beginning of the Civil War he was appointed a colonel in the Confederate army and assigned to duty in northwestern Virginia. Colonel Porterfield first went to Grafton, but when he learned that the enemy greatly outnumbered him, he retreated to Philippi. He was expecting reinforcements but, while waiting for them, he was suddenly attached on June 3, 1861, by two Federal detachments. In the ensuing contest he was defeated and in the "Philippi Races" withdrew to Beverly, where on June 8 he was superseded by Brigadier General Robert S. Garnett. He later served on the staff of General W. W. Loring but retired from service in 1862.

Colonel Porterfield came to Charles Town after the war and in 1870 was made secretary of the Valley Fire Insurance Company. At his suggestion this was reorganized as the Bank of Charles Town, which he served as cashier for a number of years. He died at the county seat on February 27, 1919, in his ninety-seventh year, and his remains were taken to Martinsburg for burial.
