     His body was interred at Charles Town, Jefferson County, Virginia, at Zion Episcopal Church. Col. John Augustin Washington was the great-nephew of General George Washington, and Mt. Vernon's last owner bearing the name.

He served in the Confederate Army with Robert E. Lee during his campaign in western Virginia (now West Virginia). Col. Washington shared a tent with Captain Taylor and Robert E. Lee.

In a letter to his wife dated September 17, 1861, from Valley Mount, Virginia, concerning the campaign in western Virginia, Lee described the death of Col. Washington.

"We met with one heavy loss which grieves me deeply: Colonel Washington accompanied Fitzhugh on a reconnoitering expedition, and I fear they were carried away by their zeal and approached within the enemy's pickets. The first they knew was a volley from a concealed party within a few yards of them. Their balls passed through the Colonel's body, then struck Fitzhugh's horse, and the horse of one of the men was killed. Fitzhugh mounted the Colonel's horse and brought him off. I am much grieved. He was always anxious to go on these expeditions. This was the first day I assented. Since I had been thrown into such intimate relations with him, I had learned to appreciate him very highly. Morning and evening have I seen him on his knees praying to his Maker."

In a letter to Governor John Letcher written on the same day and from the same place Lee states:

"Our greatest loss is the death of my dear friend, Colonel Washington. He and my son were reconnoitering the front of the enemy. They came unawares upon a concealed party, who fired upon them within twenty yards, and the Colonel fell pierced by three balls. My son's horse received three shots, but he escaped on the Colonel's horse. His zeal for the cause to which he had devoted himself carried him, I fear, too far."

     His body was interred at Berkeley County, Virginia, at J. VanMetre Cemetery. He married Isabella Evans. Jacob was born at Virginia in 1738. Jacob died on 22 October 1800 at Berkeley County, Virginia.

     She married Jacob VanMetre. Her body was interred at Berkeley County, Virginia, at J. VanMetre Cemetery. Isabella was born in 1746. Isabella died on 28 January 1817.

He married Sarah Wallace Lyle on 21 February 1805. Dougal died on 23 December 1844 at age 67. He was buried after 23 December 1844 at Gerrardstown Presbyterian Church, Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, West Virginia.

     Sarah was born on 11 July 1787. She married Dougal Campbell on 21 February 1805. Sarah died on 11 April 1875 at age 87. She was buried after 11 April 1875 at Gerrardstown Presbyterian Church, Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, West Virginia.

     James was born at Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, Virginia, on 4 May 1808. He married Rebecca Burns Hedges at Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, Virginia, on 3 March 1829. James died on 27 August 1875 at Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, West Virginia, at age 67. His body was interred after 27 August 1875 at Berkeley County, West Virginia, at Tuscarora Presbyterian Church.

     Rebecca was born on 28 July 1802. She married James Lyle Campbell at Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, Virginia, on 3 March 1829. Rebecca died on 17 October 1871 at Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, West Virginia, at age 69. Her body was interred after 17 October 1871 at Berkeley County, West Virginia, at Tuscarora Presbyterian Church.
